I got rather fortunate. The kimono I arrived in was positively beautiful, but it's not very practical for traveling.

[This sure is a new face appearing on the network, seated at a window seat in a cafe. The way the 'Gear is positioned shows Cherrygrove outside, so it's clear he's done a little traveling. The bandana tied around his arm and the green apron he's wearing identify him as a shiny new breeder. There's a little Charmander on his shoulder, too.]

Let me introduce myself. My name is Garry- I'm a friend of Ib's if you happen to know her. We arrived in Cherrygrove not too long ago. I was hoping now that I've gotten... a little used to things, maybe someone could answer a few questions I have.

I'm apparently a "breeder", or at least that's what it seems to say in this handbook I was given. I've read through it, so I think I have a decent idea of what to do.. It seems Izzy here- [A point to the Charmander.] - is in the 'Monster' and 'Dragon' groups, right? What sort of Pokemon are good to breed in those groups? Or... if you don't know, what are your favorite to breed? Any sort of tips would be appreciated.

I got an egg not too long ago- [He adjusts the camera to show the little egg on his lap.] Cyndaquil is in the... field group, I believe. I know it doesn't match, but I thought maybe it would be for the best if I didn't jump into things right away. Pokemon being 'just friends' seems like a good start before I start to breed them.

[He'd much rather be home... But when in Rome, right?]

Also, I've heard there are some people who have been here for quite some time. If you'd like to talk, I'm curious about some things.

Nice to meet you Garry and welcome to Johto. [Otacon waved through the PokeGear's screen at the new guy. It was nice to welcome new people, right? He himself was still pretty new too.]

A Breeder, huh? I was going to pick Breeder too but changed my mind at the last minute. You got an egg? [Otacon's eyes slightly widened at the small egg in his lap.] Who gave you that?

[At the very least, it seems to make Garry feel better. He's still not entirely sold on this place, but it puts a lot of his worries at ease with each friendly person who responds.]

Thank you. Oh, this? [He places a hand on the egg.] There was a place I heard about through an ad... It seems that they like to give an egg for free to new people here. I thought it would be good company for Izzy, and if something happens to him while we're fighting off those other creatures on the paths, there will be something to back him up.

I hope I made a good choice... I'm a bit new to this sort of thing.

I've not actually got one of those yet. Perhaps I should find out, since I'm new here too. [He felt Piplup jump up onto his shoulder to get a better look at the new guy.]

This is Piplup, my starter Pokémon. He's very interested in new people so forgive his face pushing against the screen at times. [He smiled at the little blue penguin.]

So, you said you got your egg through an Ad? Do you know what Pokémon it will be when it hatches?

Goodness, quite a few of these seem rather cute... [There's a funny kind of relief to his voice. So far he's yet to find any Pokemon that scare him- well, too much. There are a few that worry him, but it's more for Ib than anything.]

[...Definitely Ib and not himself. Definitely.]

At least a friendly little thing like that means you'll never be lonely.

Oh, yes, I was allowed to choose! It seems it's going to be something called a Cyndaquil. It seems to have to do with fire too, so hopefully it and Izzy will get along in the future.

Yeah, they do. My Piplup is certainly one of the cutest Pokémon I've seen so far. [Piplup smiled proudly and placed his little wings on either side of his body. It seemed he agreed.]

Perhaps you got an egg because you're a Breeder. Maybe us Trainers don't get eggs. At least, I didn't when I first arrived here. I've spoken with a few other Trainers and it seems that we catch Pokémon to train from the wild. I've not actually done that yet. [He looked across to Piplup and offered him a apologetic smile.]

Cyndaquil? Oh, fire. One of my close friends has a Fire-type too. He's got a Torkoal.

Well, I didn't see anything that said "Breeders only", so it can't hurt to try talking to the Breeding Center. They delivered Cyndaquil's egg to me, so it seems there are more ways to get involved in this than battling Pokemon from the wild. I'm grateful for that- I don't think I could handle that sort of thing, even if Izzy does seem more interested in it than I do...

[The Charmander in question gives a low content noise of confirmation. It doesn't understand its trainer's hesitancy in battling, but it won't rush him.]

Torkoal... I haven't seen that one, yet. What does it look like?

Well, from what I can remember, it's like a tortoise. A fire tortoise. [That's what Snake said, right? Otacon couldn't remember completely but he did remember the fire tortoise part.]

It likes to use fire attacks and emit smoke from it's body. It sounds like a strong Pokémon to have.

It does... But I suppose I should just stay with two fire types for now. Even if fire has come in handy for me more than once...

["Set everything on fire" is something of a legitimate strategy, he's starting to feel- or at least he's feeling a stronger connection with that than anything.]

So, you like fire, huh? [Otacon offered the boy a playful smirk.] How many Pokémon do you have, if I may ask?

I just find it's really useful for a lot of different things...

Ah, I've just arrived. With Cyndaquil, that brings it up to two.

Cyndaquil looks like a great friend to have with you, especially if you get caught in a snow shower. [Yeah, he was being dorky.]

Or if you need to light your way through somewhere, as well. [Or burn to death the painting of a small mentally disturbed violent child who wants to stab you with a palette knife-] Simply put, I'd rather have it on me than not... Especially with my lighter still out of fluid. I really should have it filled up again sometime soon while I'm here...

Yeah. I can see him being a useful friend when it comes to dark caves or dim environments. [He nodded.]

Your lighter? Oh. You smoke?

Well... I like to say "I used to" and I was managing very well for quite some time. However, after a very perilous event back home and all of this... I'll admit the stress is making me want a cigarette again. [His shoulders slump a little in disappointment.] Here I had been hoping I had kicked that habit completely..

It's good that you want to kick the habit. One of my friends here smokes quite a lot and it pains me to see him ruin his lungs like that. [Otacon doubted that this guy smoked as much as Snake though.]

Have you spoken with him about it? Sometimes people don't realize what they're doing to others until it's pointed out to them...

He's an old friend of mine and soldier. It's no use telling him to stop, as the cigarettes are a comfort to him. Unhealthy as they are, I'm not his mother, so I can't really force him to stop. [It's all he's got left since he's dying already.]

I see... I do hope he realizes what a good friend he seems to have in you. Ah, if you don't mind me saying so.
