Character
Name: Garry
Series: Ib
Timeline: Promise of Reunion ending
Canon Resource Links: Blue rose
Personality: In all honesty, Garry isn't a particularly extraordinary individual. He like fashion, macarons, walking, and small cafes along with the occasional visit to artsy places. He's easily startled and scared. There might be something of a smoking problem. He's the big sister type. Not a legendary hero or a caped superhero, no. Just your regular kind of guy who ends up getting sucked into a strange world revolving around the works of some dead old artist and being chased around by supernatural horrors.
As happens. Y'know.
Perhaps one of Garry's most obvious traits is his tendency towards kindness and self sacrifice. After Ib retrieves his rose and helps him, he immediately promises to help her on the basis that she is a small child who needs that help. This is notable because Garry has already experienced the horrors that Guertena's world can produce just by his run in with a Blue Lady and the loss of his rose. Not once does he ever show any desire to leave Ib's side, or even Mary's until she pulls out the palette knife. Despite his fear of the situation and being easily scared just by the sound of glass breaking, Garry will put himself in all sorts of danger so long as it means that Ib will be safe. In certain endings, he'll give up his own rose- his own life- so that she will have a chance at getting out. Even when Mary does turn on him and Ib, Garry never truly shows hatred towards her. There's distrust and fear, but never hatred. Destroying Mary's portrait is a last resort, something unavoidable when there's a crazed supernatural child chasing after you with a palette knife. He even shows sympathy to her plight when looking through her things such as the book on how to make friends.
For all the heavy lifting he does and the rough way he's forced to handle Mary at times, Garry clearly prefers a more gentle touch. He shows reluctance to dirty Ib's handkerchief even if it's for his own good, and treats her carefully such as when she collapses by offering both his coat and some candy. An even better indicator of this part of his nature is something that is lost in translation from Japanese to English. In the original version of the game, he speaks with more 'feminine' pronouns in Japanese.
Garry isn't perfect, however. It's quite easy to startle him, whether with a loud noise or simply not answering him in a dark room. He perhaps overreacts to surprises such as that, yelling loudly in shock or even falling backwards. When it really matters and with adrenaline pumping through him, he can get over such fears... but he's hardly any kind of super hero and reacts mostly on the most obvious solution at any given time. (Mary threatening Ib with a knife? Just shove her. Mary chasing after with a knife? Run away and destroy what seems to be the source.) It should also be noted that Garry doesn't just get fearful. At certain times, he also gets angry after his moment of fright has passed. When he's been scared or frustrated by inanimate objects in Guertena's world, he's often been tempted to act violently upon them and only stopped by Ib or his own self control. When it comes to the people he cares about going missing, he can also display his frustration at them only to become apologetic that he acted in such a manner.
Strengths/Weaknesses: Garry isn't canonly in the possession of too many useful skills, at least that we're shown. He's shown to have decent enough endurance by running through Guertena's world and constantly moving aside fairly heavy statues. He does seem to get a boost of speed when particularly terrified, however.
That is something which can happen often- Guertena's world has only served to make Garry more jumpy than he was before that whole event. It's also left him with a strong fear of dolls, particularly rather twisted ones although even just normal non-scary dolls now give him the heebie-jeebies. Them and mannequins are the quickest way to get under his skin and have him sprinting in the opposite direction.
It's shown that he can be a bit forgetful at times, such as not remembering the name of a large exhibition piece from the museum. With his ending and escaping the doll room, it's not as bad as it could be but he still sometimes has little things slip.
For all that he's a bit of a coward, he'll immediately jump in to protect someone he cares about no matter how much it might hurt himself.

You know, I almost forgot how much I missed the city. There really isn't anywhere like a nice big city with all sorts of little nooks and crannies, is there?
[It seems Garry has found himself quite at home in Celadon city. He's seated on a bench, Charmander extremely happy in its place on his lap. It's such a nice day, how could they not be out and about to enjoy it? Garry gives a content sigh.]
The other cities were nice too, but don't you agree there's something different about large cities? Anyway... If anyone has some hotspots they know of around here, we certainly wouldn't mind taking a look at them. After so much traveling, I think we're allowed a little sight seeing.
[The Charmander makes a content little noise of agreement.]
Third Person Sample:
Celadon City, most famous for its beautiful gym...
He hears it's beautiful. Quite a sight to see. Everyone continues to suggest it, amongst other things such as the Game Corner and the Department Store. Maybe once upon a time, he would have considered it. Gardens were so gorgeous. The kind of place artists went for all sorts of inspiration. He should know, with the kinds of places he used to frequent back home.
Yet Garry looks at it, the enormous place with its greenhouse and the flowers blooming about, and he can only feel uneasy. Faintly, he thinks of the blue rose that's in his backpack. Without him trying, the memory of vines spring up into his mind. It's hard to tell which he thinks of more: vines like stone bursting out from the ground to hold him like prison bars, or scribbled out pieces of green that didn't seem like they should be real.
There's a little cry at his feet, and Garry snaps out of his thoughts. Automatically, he finds himself smiling gently at the little Charmander at his feet. Leaning down, he runs his fingers over the top of its head. "I'm sorry, I suppose I got lost in thought. Where do you want to go today?" It gives an excited wiggle with its entire body before pointing off into a certain direction. Garry chuckles softly. "The Game Corner again? We're going to be spending all our money at the rate you're going you know... Just for a little while, then." He scoops it up into his arms, feeling his shoulders lose all tension at the heat in the creature's tiny little body. Far better than an old lighter that's out of oil, that's for sure. Besides, it made much better company. That was the important thing.
